Writing History in the Face of Fanaticism: Ernst Cassirer and his Reception as a Historian

Emilie Aebischer is a PhD candidate in Modern History at the University of St Andrews. Her work centers on the German-Jewish Philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945), particularly on his historical writings. Through her study of Cassirer, which draws out the interplay and connections between his life and thought, she investigates questions of German-Jewish identity beyond religion, liberalism during the Weimar Republic, and the experience and impact of exile. Her research has been supported by the Leo Baeck Fellowship for German-Jewish studies and the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung).
