Leo Baeck Institute London – vacant position

 

Position:

Assistant to Director, part-time (2.5 days/week) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

 

Salary:

Salary £32,000 pro rata (Two Year Fixed Term Role)

 

Start:

March 2018

 

Job description:

The assistant will directly report to the director of the institute and his/her duties will include:

  • identifying funding sources, preparing funding proposals and assisting generally in the fundraising efforts of the LBI in coordination with the director and members of the executive
  • assisting in the development and organisation of new academic events
  • assisting in the preparation of academic publications
  • maintaining and establishing contacts to other academic institutions in the UK and abroad

The role is based at the Institute’s Office at 2nd Floor, Arts Two Building, Queen Mary University  of London, Mile End, London E1 4NS.

Benefits include 5 weeks holiday pro-rata, Statutory Sick Pay and Statutory Pension only.

 

Person Profile

An MA graduate (essential) or holder of a PhD in a field related to the research interests of the institute, keen to gain insights and acquire the management skills required to operate a small successful academic institute. Previous work experience will be essential as the role will have limited supervision and the successful candidate must be a self-starter and able to operate on their own initiative.

Stakeholders with whom the candidate will collaborate include, trustees, board members and other academics working in the field of German and European Jewish studies in the UK, Europe, North America and Israel.

An important part of the role will be obtaining and maintaining contacts with senior academic and non-academic individuals predominantly in the fields of fundraising and grant awards, primarily in the UK.

Some of the work will require a good working knowledge of German, so a reasonable degree of fluency in the German language and empathy with the aims and objectives of the Institute would be mandatory.

Good interpersonal skills are essential and must be able to work well in a team.

The Leo Baeck Institute London is offering 2 – 3 months long work placements / internships for students currently enrolled at a university.

Interns will have the chance to gain valuable experience of working in an academic setting and getting to know the work of a small but busy and long-established research institute. We are based on the campus of Queen Mary, University of London, one of the  UK’s top universities.

Each year, in addition to our permanent staff, we also have a volunteer from Action Reconciliation Service for Peace.

Possible tasks will include research, general office work, organizing lectures and events. You will be required to be fluent in English. German language skills are an advantage but are not compulsory. You do not have to be a student of history, but should have an interest in our field of study.

Unfortunately the Institute is unable to pay a salary, however we do reimburse transport costs.
