This
is a long-term LBI project, carried out by Ulrich Charpa and Ute
Deichmann. It aims to document, evaluate, and explain the role of
Jews in German-speaking academia during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The
LBI London has been actively involved in setting up this new European
network of institutions interested in the study of antisemitism.
At present the network includes, besides the LBI, the Hamburg
Institute for Social Research, the Wiener Library London,
the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst and Center for
Sociological Analysis and Intervention in Paris.
A series of eyewitness accounts were collected following the events
of 9th November 1938 by the Jewish Central Information Office (JCIO),
the predecessor of the Wiener Library. It was the aim of the JCIO
to collect material on the antisemitic activities of the National
Socialists and on the situation of German Jewry. The LBI and the
Wiener Library are preparing a complete edition of this unique collection
of historical documents.
