The Leo
Baeck Institute,
named after
Leo Baeck, the last public representative of the Jewish community in Nazi
Germany, was founded in 1955 by the Council of Jews from Germany. It is
the aim of the Institute to put on record the history and culture of German-speaking
Jewry.
With centres
in London, New York and Jerusalem,
the Leo Baeck Institute is the leading research institute in the field
of German-Jewish history and culture.
In Germany, the
Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft,
the Verein der Freunde und Förderer in Frankfurt/Main
and an archival branch of the New York archive
at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, all contribute to the work of the three
centres.
The Institute
focuses in particular on the once large Jewish communities, destroyed
in the Holocaust, which made such an immeasurable contribution to European
culture.
The LBI's
publications cover many facets of Jewish history in Central Europe - from
historical analyses of life in the poorer Jewish communities to research
on the intellectual and cultural legacy of more well-known figures, particularly
those of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Rahel Varnhagen, Heinrich
Heine, Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, Hermann Cohen, Albert Einstein, Martin
Buber, Franz Rosenzweig and Hannah Arendt.

The
Leo Baeck Institute London
is responsible
for the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book which has appeared without
a break for the last 50 years. Its articles cover cultural, economic,
political, social and religious history as well as the impact of antisemitism
and the Jewish responses to it. The Year Book's classified bibliography
is regarded as being of unique value for researchers and students.
In addition to the Year Book, symposium volumes and monographs,
the Institute is instrumental in publishing the Schriftenreihe wissenschaftlicher
Abhandlungen, which comprises today 70 volumes.
Other functions
of the London LBI include the organisation of a broad range of events
such as lecture programmes and organising international conferences
both in the UK and abroad as well as funding fellowships. The Institute
has recently been successful in establishing two research professorships
to investigate the role of German-speaking Jews in 19th and 20th century
academia.
In addition
to its publishing and conference activities, the London Leo Baeck Institute
fulfils other functions related to its role as an educational charity.
Our staff give information to the general public, advise scholars and
students engaged in research on German-Jewish history, collect archival
material for the New York Leo Baeck Institute, act as referees to organisations
funding scholarships, and vet manuscripts submitted to publishers in England,
Germany and the United States, and act as examiners for Dphil and MA candidates
in UK universities.
